LIFE DIMITRA
Use of digestates in biosolids for environmentally friendly agriculture
Biogas is a key solution for combating global warming and reducing dependence on unsustainable energy resources. Despite its environmental benefits, biogas production generates significant amounts of digestate as a byproduct, mainly used as fertilizer on farm fields. However, this practice creates significant environmental challenges, including greenhouse gas emissions, water pollution and solids contamination. In response to these problems, LIFE DIMITRA is focusing on increasing the sustainability of agricultural management practices. The focus is on valorizing digestate to produce high-quality biosolids. LIFE DIMITRA aims to achieve a harmonious synergy of benefits by pushing the boundaries of the current state of knowledge in sustainable digestate valorization and management, and promoting the dissemination and adoption of low-carbon technologies for biogas digestate. The project’s results are expected to have a positive impact on climate change mitigation, increased yields and enhanced farm profitability. With these improvements, the LIFE DIMITRA project seeks to establish a more resilient and environmentally friendly approach to the entire biogas production cycle, consistent with broader goals of sustainable agriculture and resource management.
The LIFE DIMITRA concept will be realized through the implementation of two demonstration facilities in two European countries (Greece, Italy). The integrated technology solutions include dewatering of raw digestate (AD) and management of the liquid and solid fraction of wastewater to produce value-added products that can be used locally by farmers for zero liquid and waste discharge. The proposed technologies will be installed and applied at demonstration scale adjacent to existing AD plants operating on agricultural waste. The high efficiency and long life of the DEMO plants will ensure demonstration of the technological schemes in an environment similar to industrial conditions, thus confirming their techno-economic feasibility. Experimental procedures have been developed for both process trains, i.e. DEMO1 and DEMO2, by NTUA and UNIVR, respectively.
